A mysterious alien cloud is headed directly to Earth. The former captain of the USS Enterprise, James T. Kirk, is called back into service and given command of his old ship. He has one mission: determine the mysterious cloud’s intent.

Returning to aid Kirk are a collection of familiar faces. However, attitudes have changed and there’s a strange tension in every interaction. Kirk himself is terrified of growing old and being forgotten. His young XO is eager to regain control of the Enterprise. Spock is grumpier than usual. And McCoy looks like he was called back into service in the middle of a cocaine-fueled orgy.

The Motion Picture was the first new live-action Star Trek in almost a decade. It’s a very strange film. It fetishizes extremely long shots of both the Enterprise and V’Ger. The resulting pace can be most charitably described as glacial. It has a drab color pallette – the bright yellows, reds and blues of the old TV show are now replaced with various shades of sand. And the characters are morose and serious to a fault.

But still, despite all its flaws, The Motion Picture remains the most unique of the Star Trek films. It’s an overly intellectual film that is trying to portray depth similar to 2001, but doesn’t have as much to say. It is incredibly slow, but equally mesmerizing. There are not many films like it.
