In “The Impossible Box”, Picard and the crew track Soji to the Borg cube in Romulan space, resurfacing haunting memories for Picard. Meanwhile, Narek believes he finally found a way to safely exploit Soji for information.

At the Borg cube, Picard is haunted by his brief history as Locutus. He reconnects with Hugh, who is now the director of the Borg Reclamation Project. Hugh explains the goal of the project: to rescue people from the Collective and restore them the best they can. Hugh explains that when people are Borg they’re the most hated race in the galaxy, but their fate post-reclamation is almost just as bad. Picard states that the project is doing good for the universe and is relieved to see that de-Borgification can be done on a mass scale with positive results.

Meanwhile, Narek and Rizzo continue to plot against Soji. Using a perfectly thematic Romulan Rubik’s Cube as a symbol, Narek ups his attempts to unlock the memories within Soji. Narek brings Soji to an exclusive Romulan meditation dojo and uses Romulan therapy techniques to help Soji remember her dreams. As Soji relives a waking dream she’s had for several days, she reveals to herself her false nature. And even worse, she reveals to Narek and Rizzo some descriptive qualities about her homeworld. Rizzo punches in a search for a planet with two red moons and constant electrical storms.

Picard and Hugh rescue Soji from Narek’s Bond villain-esque attempt to murder her. Hugh brings Picard and Soji to the “Queens Cell” and shows them an advanced transporter (also a Voyager reference). As Picard and Soji escape using the transporter, Elron and Hugh try to hold off their pursuers and are left trapped on the Borg cube.

In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss “The Impossible Box”. The duo analyze how well the show merged its two plot threads in an action-packed 55 minutes. Plus! They discuss the similarities of Picard and Soji, whether or not the Picard in this series resembles the Picard of TNG, and why the Borg story line is so effective!
