Far Beyond the Stars – Ft. Clay

Ben Sisko suddenly finds himself as a science-fiction writer in the mid-1950s and creates a character named “Benjamin Sisko”, a black commander of a space station in the distant future. The rest of the DS9 cast is also here – they’re writers, ballplayers, con men and corrupt cops. Far Beyond the Stars deals with racism and the insidious ways that it finds its way into various aspects of life, and it’s generally regarded as one of the strongest stand alone episodes that the series ever produced. Listen as Wes and Clay discuss DS9’s attempt to re-calibrate the series with an episode that has a lot to say and does so in a very sophisticated way.

Ben Sisko finds himself in the 1950s. He’s a science-fiction writer named Benny Russell who has to hide his race from his readers, and who finds himself in a work environment where his contributions are minimized and altered. One day, inspiration strikes and he writes a story about Benjamin Sisko, the black commander of a space station in the distant future.

The rest of the DS9 cast is also here. They play authors obsessed with robots, woman who have to pose as men to be published, supporters of Stalin, grumpy artists, ballplayers, con men, and waitresses. Cirroc Lofton is also here, doing… something.

In order to get his work published, benny has to manage corrupt cops and doubting peers. He has to battle a management more interested in the bottom line than pushing societal norms. And he has to figure out if he’s losing his mind, or if Ben Sisko is real.

Far Beyond the Stars is frequently compared to The City on the Edge of Forever. Both deal with time travel, but more importantly, both take an established series and reconfigure it to make its themes more obvious and relatable to a modern audience. It’s an extremely sophisticated episode of Star Trek and it’s one that showcases the versatility of the DS9 cast and the unique perspective that DS9 had on the “Roddenberry Ideal”.

Wes and Clay discuss one of DS9’s finest hours and come away impressed with how the series is developing.
