Image in the Sand | Shadows and Symbols

The seventh and final season of DS9 opens with the reunion of Sisko and Dax, the emotional turmoil of Worf, and the empowerment of the Bajoran people. It ends with a revelation about Sisko that may or may not change everything?

The seventh and final season of Star Trek: Deep Space 9 opens with Sisko and Dax reunited on Earth, Worf in emotional turmoil over the death of Jadzia, and the Bajorans learning that they’ll eventually need to stand on their own two feet.

It closes with a revelation about Sisko that may or may not change everything, and a new Dax onboard DS9 who… may or may not change everything.

With its final season, DS9 begins to move even more aggressively towards a Prophet-centric story and the opening two episodes of this season lay the groundwork for that movement. Sisko becomes Space Jesus for the Prophets and has his faith repeatedly tested. A religious resurrection becomes sci-fi fodder as the character of Dax is reintegrated into the show. The wormhole serves as a religious beacons for many other characters who are having their faith tested: Worf with his desire to see Jadzia enter Sto’vo’kor and Kira with her faith in Bajoran sovereignty.

It’s a decidedly low key season opener. After bombastic episodes like Way of the Warrior and Apocalypse Rising, Image in the Sand and Shadows and Symbols provide only a small break from the action before returning to the status quo. DS9 has only a short amount of time to resolve its multitude of story lines, so was the decision worth it or does it feel like like too little, too late?

Wes and Clay get together to celebrate the start of yet another season of DS9. Plus! The guys talk about Quark tagging along, the cult of the Pah-Wraith, and the vapid coolness of Benny Russell!
