Broken Bow

Wes and Clay kick off their coverage of Star Trek: Enterprise by discussing the pilot, “Broken Bow”!

Enterprise is the sixth Star Trek series. It launched in 2001 but only ran four seasons and was cancelled in 2005. Was it a victim of over saturation or was it the last gasp of a dying franchise?

In this episode, the guys explain their (limited) knowledge of the series and then break down the pilot. Listen as they discuss the logic of crop tops in space, sexual camera work, and the warm familiarity of Scott Bakula!

Star Trek: Enterprise, originally titled Enterprise until Season 3, is the sixth series set in the Star Trek universe. Created by Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, and based upon Gene Roddenberry’s classic 1966 Star Trek (and its subsequent spin-offs), Enterprise was a “prequel”, set a century before the time of Kirk and Spock. The series followed the voyages of the first starship Enterprise and mankind’s first steps into the “final frontier”. Initially titled as simply Enterprise, the series ran an abbreviated four seasons. The series debuted in 2001 on the United Paramount Network replacing Star Trek: Voyager. It was cancelled in 2005. “Broken Bow” is the pilot for Star Trek: Enterprise.

Written by Braga and Berman, “Broken Bow” introduces us to the world of the mid 22nd century. One hundred years after First Contact with the Vulcans, humanity aches to explore the stars. Their Vulcan advisors, however, are concerned that humanity does not grasp the complexities of traveling among the stars and interacting with new civilizations and species. The “older brother” Vulcans have been intentionally delaying the launch of a new Warp 5 vessel, the Enterprise NX-01.

When a Klingon crash lands in Oklahoma and becomes wounded, Starfleet decides to send the Enterprise on its maiden voyage: to return the Klingon to his homeworld. Captain Jonathan Archer and his crew assemble and leave Earth, only to stumble into the complexities that the Vulcans had warned them about. There’s Temporal Cold War brewing and shadowy agents are seeking information about… something.

Archer and his crew must deliver their cargo to the Klingon homeworld and start humanity’s journey on the right foot. Will they have… faith of the heart?

In this episode of the show, Wes and Clay kick off their coverage of Star Trek: Enterprise. Neither have much experience with this series, so it’ll be a novel adventure for both of them. Is Enterprise underrated? Was it just a victim of poor timing and over saturation, or was the it last gasp of a dying franchise?

Listen as the guys discuss the logic of wearing a crop top in space, the familiarity of Scott Bakula, and the interesting timeline of the 22nd century!
