PIC PIC Season 1

Broken Pieces

In “Broken Pieces”, mysteries start to unravel as our characters gain insight into the machinations around them.

Picard and the crew discover the intentions of the Romulans and Commodore Oh, while Elnor and Seven attempt to re-take the Borg Cube.

When devastating truths behind the Mars attack are revealed, Picard realizes just how far many will go to preserve secrets stretching back generations, all while the La Sirena crew grapples with secrets and revelations of their own. Narissa directs her guards to capture Elnor, setting off an unexpected chain of events on the Borg cube. “Broken Pieces” attempts to initiate the close of this season of Star Trek: Picard.

In an exposition-heavy hour of television, the plotlines of Picard begin to pull into focus. The Romulans discovered a warning from an ancient society that predicts the rise of artificial intelligence and a cataclysmic event after the AI reaches a threshold. The “conclave of eight” is actually a reference to a rare star system that was artificially created to bring attention to the warning. The Zhat Vast is a response to this warning – knowing the future is so devastating that it brings people to madness.

This madness is apparently what broke the Borg cube that is now known as the Artifact. When a Tal Shiar ship was assimilated, one of the crew knew the secret. Her tremendous grief caused the cube to shut down.

On the La Sirena, Raffi works to discover why Rios became a deer in headlights when Soji arrived. Interrogating Rios’ hologram crewmembers gives her the courage to actually knock on Rios’ door. Once inside and bonding with the roguish ex-commander, Raffi learns that Rios’ past ties into the android situation. He was a commander to a captain who met two synthetic life forms on another mission. His captain was ordered to kill them by Commodore Oh (who is now confirmed as a half Romulan, half Vulcan).

On the cube, Elnor stays alive long enough to allow for Seven to arrive. Seven was drawn by the Fenris Ranger SOS, which was apparently left behind by Hugh. Seven served as the previous Reclamation Project director and gave Hugh a convenient fail-safe that nevertheless failed to protect him. Seven, realizing that they are not safe from the Romulans, reactivates the cube and becomes a new Borg Queen. The Romulans respond by shooting all remaining Borg drones into the vacuum of space. Seven disconnects from the Collective, saying that Annika’s work is not yet finished.

In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss “Broken Pieces” and try to collect their thoughts about the resolution of so many mysteries.
