Change of Heart – Ft. Clay

While on a mission to rendezvous with a Cardassian spy, Dax is seriously wounded and Worf is forced to make a choice between saving his wife and completing the mission. It’s our first episode since the wedding to focus on the marriage of Worf and Dax, and “Change of Heart” gives you plenty to chew on. We get some insight into the banter of newlyweds, learn about Worf’s definition of “duty”, and learn all about the sleeping arrangements of our favorite Trill and Klingon!

In the B-plot, Bashir and O’Brien try to defeat Quark in a game of Tongo, and Clay reveals how little knowledge about early DS9 he has retained.

The guys also discuss literal figures of speech, expecting explanations from Star Trek, and how to make a nonsense game work for television!

While attempting to rendezvous with a Cardassian double-agent, Dax is badly wounded and Worf is forced to make a choice between saving his wife and completing their mission. Back on DS9, O’Brien recruits Bashir to help him end Quark’s 207 game winning streak in Tongo.

This is our first Worf and Dax-centric episode since they were married earlier in the season (we get a nice shot of a picture from their medieval-times themed wedding). The duo have quickly grown to become Star Trek’s de facto romantic relationship through a combination of chemistry, good writing, and a lack of serious competition. In “Change of Heart” we learn about how much Worf has grown over the past few seasons and what he currently values.

In a B-plot that is sure to have its fair share of critics, O’Brien and Bashir rekindle their easy-going camaraderie and attempt to beat Quark at a nonsense game that nonetheless seems like something that’d be fun to play. Quark demonstrates his mastery over Tongo by swiftly defeating mega-brain Bashir by probing the good doctors mind and heart.

“Change of Heart” does away with the high concept sci-fi of “One Little Ship” and replaces wishy- washy characters like Bilby from “Honor Among Thieves” with characters that we know and understand, and the result is a… pretty decent episode? Who’d have thought!

Clay and Wes sit down to discuss an episode where Worf chooses love over his career, and Bashir realizes that it’s time to move on. 

They also discuss the constant conflict at the heart of a relationship, how O’Brien and Bashir would be written in 2019, and the sleeping arrangements of the 24th century!
