DS9 DS9 Season 7

Chimera

A Changeling, Laas, finds Odo returning from a conference. Laas reveals that he is another of the Hundred Changelings. Laas tries to convince Odo to leave DS9 and join him in the search for the other Changelings, but things are not so easy for a “Chimera” such as Odo.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay get together to talk about the redemption of DS9’s seventh season and the complexities of the Changelings.

A Changeling, Laas, finds Odo returning from a conference. Laas reveals that he is another of the Hundred Changelings. Like Odo, he was sent out, as an infant, into the galaxy to gather information for the Founders. He has lived among humanoids for hundreds of years. Odo, in comparison, has only been holding the form of a solid for approximately thirty years. Laas tries to convince Odo to leave DS9 and join him in the search for the other Changelings. Things are not so easy for a “Chimera” such as Odo.

The reason that Odo has remained on DS9 is Kira. Odo deeply loves her, and even though it pains him to remain a solid and defy his true nature, he is unable to leave her with Laas. Throughout “Chimera”, we learn about the nature of the Changelings, the prejudice they experience from the solids, the unique bond they share with each other, and the sacrifices that one makes for love.

After a long stretch of mediocre episodes, DS9 finally gets around to a plot that both feels of the show and of an ending. We are given additional clarity about the Founders and how they view the universe. We get an Odo story that re-centers the audiences understanding of the Constable. And we finally (FINALLY) get an episode that does something with the Kira and Odo relationship. Does something, of course, besides have Odo be a complete pushover.

Chimera is an important episode for the setup of the upcoming Final Chapter arc. It shows that the series still has something to say and places that it wants to go. And lastly, it serves the characters of Odo and Kira in a way that makes their relationship actually bearable to watch!

In this podcast, Wes and Clay get together to talk about the redemption of DS9’s seventh season and the complexities of the Changelings.
