Honor Among Thieves – Ft. Clay

O’Brien is recruited for an undercover Starfleet operation where he must infiltrate the Orion Syndicate and bring it down from the inside. During his mission, he befriends a man named Bilby. As their friendship flourishes, O’Brien becomes more and more conflicted about his mission: will he be able to betray Bilby?

Back on DS9, the station is falling apart without its chief engineer. And that’s pretty all that you need to know about that plotline because… that’s all that happens.

Wes and Clay discuss “Honor Among Thieves” and find themselves thinking about The Departed, wondering how an episode that features the theme of “family” can so completely ignore Keiko and the kids, and debate the plotlines that feature Miles O’Brien!

O’Brien is recruited by Starfleet Intelligence to infiltrate the Orion Syndicate crime ring and find out the identity of the Starfleet officer that is leaking information about their undercover operations to the Syndicate. Despite having no background in espionage and a wife and child back on the station of which he is chief engineer (which is a vital location in the war against the Dominion), O’Brien does his best and soon befriends a middle-level gangster named Bilby.

Bilby and O’Brien quickly form a deep connection, as Bilby is a lonely old man looking for someone to listen to his stories, and O’Brien is a semi-decent liar who can sometimes fix things. As time moves on, O’Brien learns that the Dominion are working with the Syndicate to create a rift in the Klingon Empire that will lead to the dissolution of the Federation-Klingon alliance.

O’Brien warns Starfleet about the plan, only to be told that he must allow the Syndicate to continue their plans: the Klingons have been alerted to the assassination attempt and the Syndicate and Bilby will be walking into a trap. O’Briens loyalty to Starfleet comes into conflict with his newfound respect for Bilby, and he’s forced to make a choice about doing the right thing.

Clay and Wes discuss “Honor Among Thieves” and analyze DS9’s attempt to portray a seedy criminal underbelly in the heart of the Federation. Can Star Trek do the “undercover agent who becomes conflicted about the mission”?

They also discuss the lack of Keiko and the kids, the confusing characterization of Bilby, and the things that The Departed did right!
