Inquisition – Ft. Clay

Internal Affairs visits the station and begins to interrogate Doctor Bashir, who they believe to be a Dominion double-agent.

“Inquisition” is most famous for being the introduction of Section 31, a shadowy covert ops group that operates without the supervision of Starfleet or the Federation. It’s also a solid episode that manages to create a creepy, paranoid atmosphere that dovetails into a look at what values the Federation might need to compromise in order to survive. We also get some adorable shots of Bashir’s teddy bear!

Clay and Wes also discuss Section 31’s penchant for leather, the nuances of Sloan’s argument, and how they could have made Section 31 even more intimidating!

Starfleet’s Internal Affairs, led by a man named Sloan, visit Deep Space 9 and begin to interrogate Doctor Bashir, who they believe to be a Dominion double-agent.

“Inquisition” is most famous for being the introduction of Section 31, a shadowy covert ops arm of Starfleet that operates under no supervision. Designed as protection against the most devastating of threats to the Federation, Section 31 believes that in order to protect the values of the Federation they must occasionally subvert them for the greater good.

In “Inquisition”, Section 31 puts Bashir through a holodeck-based interrogation in order to find out what he knows. Using past experiences in Bashir’s life, Sloan paints the doctor as a man who has always had sympathies for the Dominion. His genetic enhancements, his desire to cure the Jem’Hadar of their addiciton, and his plan to end the Dominion War via surrender are all brought up and used against the doctor in order to turn his friends against him and make him doubt himself.

It’s a mystery episode that manages some decently weird and paranoid visuals, and then dovetails into an examination of how far the Federation can bend before it breaks. Plus! We learn that Section 31 has always had a thing for leather!

In this podcast, Wes and Clay also discuss the nuances of Sloan’s argument, why Bashir is the right candidate for Section 31, and the weird fact that Section 31 was created at the founding of the Federation!
