Penumbra

DS9 has entered “The Final Chapter”! In ‘Penumbra’, Sisko and Kasidy announce their plans to marry, and Ezri tries to rescue Worf.

The “Final Chapter” is the series ending run of nine episodes that finish out DS9. in this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the problems with DS9’s serialized storytelling, when characters get “too real”, and the series treading water to get to this point!

“Penumbra” kicks off Deep Space 9’s series closing arc! “The Final Chapter” is the nine (or ten) episode arc that finishes both the seventh season and the series. In “Penumbra”, Sisko and Kasidy agree to marry each other, but the universe has other plans. Meanwhile, Ezri searches for Worf who has been lost in the Badlands. On the other side of enemy lines, Dukat meets with Damar and explains that he has a plan to do something…

Sisko finds himself looking forward to retirement and settling on Bajor. He’s designing a house. He’s planning to grow some fruit to make into wine. And the one thing he’s missing is some company from the fairer sex. So he and Kasidy agree to get married. Unfortunately, their plans for a simple wedding are complicated almost immediately. First, the Bajorans hear that the Emissary is getting married and that requires a planet-wide celebration. Next, the Prophets inform Sisko that his destiny lies elsewhere – he cannot be with Kasidy.

Ezri searches the Badlands for Worf, who has been lost in a sneak attack. She finds him, but old feelings begin to surface and the pair have a fraught conversation. They’re saved from more awkward conversation by a Jem’Hadar attack, but they find themselves stranded on a remote planet. And then they get captured by the Breen. But not before they make sweet, sweet love.

Lastly, the Dominion alliance seems to be fracturing. Damar is drinking and questioning his orders. The Changelings are sick and getting worse. Into the fray walks Dukat! He has a plan brewing but first he needs to find a good surgeon.

DS9 kicks off its final arc with an episode that does a bit of table setting but also abruptly moves into a different story telling structure. It’s something the series has done to mixed results previously, and this episode feels like more of the same.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the end being in sight, characters getting “too real”, and scenes that don’t add anything!
