After Grand Nagus Zek floats the idea of equality between the sexes, he is deposed and replaced by (acting) Grand Nagus Brunt (of the F.C.A.). To restore order, Quark undergoes a sex change and becomes a female who must convince a Ferengi cola magnate that Zek’s plan has a potential for enormous profit. Yes, this really happens. And yes, it’s as bad as they say.
In our twice-annual Ferengi episode, we get a lot of returning beats: Zek and Brunt return to DS9, those mute alien bodyguards get to have a bit of background business, and we get some mild sexism. Except, in this case, the cold open features Quark threatening a dabo girl with being fired unless she performs a sexual act on him. It’s fun for the whole family!
Profit and Lace is regarded as one of the worst Star Trek episodes of all time, and it’s certainly not an enjoyable romp with our Ferengi friends. But is it another episode in the vein of “Code of Honor”? Does its offensive subject matter attract an unfair amount of criticism, or is it a complete failure of an episode of television?
Wes and Clay get together to examine yet another failed Ferengi episode. Will the show ever manage to get this race right, or are they doomed to occupy the dustbin of bad Star Trek ideas? And can they be redeemed in a series like Discovery or Picard?
Plus! The guys discuss sexual harassment in the workplace, that scene where Brunt and the cola guy stared at Quark’s tits, and the problem with extraploating a metaphor when one simply doesn’t exist.
