At the end of the 24th century, and 14 years after his retirement from Starfleet, Jean-Luc Picard is living a quiet life on his vineyard, Chateau Picard. When he is sought out by a mysterious young woman, Dahj, in need of his help, he soon realizes she may have personal connections to his past. The pilot for Star Trek: Picard is here, and it’s called “Remembrance”.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Jean-Luc Picard! When we left the captain in Nemesis, he was moving on with a new crew and a new android, B4. Star Trek 2009 created the development of the Kelvin Universe, which was spawned by the destruction of Romulus in the Prime (Picard) timeline. When we meet up with Picard almost 20 years later, he is wasting away on the family vineyard. The destruction of Romulus was a seismic even in the galaxy, and the universe continues to feel the impact.

The Federation has become withdrawn and isolationist. They abandoned the Romulan rescue after an attack on Mars by “rogue synths” who seem to be recently created androids (similar to Data). Picard views the abandonment of the Romulans as a great stain on the Federation and Starfleet, and resigns in protest.

While living on his chateaux with some Romulan servants, he meets a girl named Dahj who inspires him to become involved again. The revelation that Dahj is an advanced synthetic sends Picard to the Daystrom Institute where it is revealed that the Federation abandoned synthetic development in response to the rogue attack. Remembrance that?

Lastly, we learn that Dahj has a sister. The sister appears to be a scientist aboard a Romulan station – which is curiously Borg shaped.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the return of Picard to the Star Trek franchise! Plus! The guys talk about delivering exposition, the modern day politics of the situation, and the modern television desire to show off some kung-fu!
