Revisiting Emissary

The two year journey through DS9 is almost finished! But before they tackle the DS9 finale, Wes and Clay head back to where it all began by revisiting the DS9 pilot, “Emissary”.

In this podcast, the guys discuss

Our journey through DS9 started in August of 2017. A little over two years later, we’re about to cross the finish line with the finale, “What You Leave Behind”! Before that happens, we thought it would be a good idea to go back to where it all started. In this podcast, we’re going to be “revisiting” the DS9 pilot, “Emissary”.

Our DS9 coverage started just as our TNG coverage left off. Wes was the lone “full time” host and a bevy of guest stars would stop by to help break down the series. Clay began the series with the role of “Dominion War” guest – the idea was that he would be present on the episodes that revolved around the Dominion, and later, the war itself.

After a few seasons, that started to become untenable. DS9, while still an episodic show at heart, quickly began to take on a life of its own. Numerous characters were introduced. Plot lines began to span multiple seasons. Characters became unrecognizable compared to their earlier selves. The hosting situation would need to be reconciled to match this new format.

Thankfully, Clay was gracious enough to step up to full time hosting responsibilities! Starting with the first episode of season four, Clay has been with the show full time (and only missed two episodes post-Way of the Warrior!). While the series picked up Worf as a full time cast member, the podcast picked up Clay.

While it’s been two years since DS9 started, it feels both longer and shorter than that. We’ve covered a lot of episodes and discussed a lot of themes. This series, more than any other Trek series, has evolved over its seven seasons. While the station remains outside the wormhole, the characters have all evolved and changed. Stories have gone for years. Ships have been introduced and destroyed. The Bajoran religion has waxed and waned in importance.

And now, before the finale, Wes and Clay refresh themselves by revisiting “Emissary”. Where it all began.
