Statistical Probabilities – Ft. Clay

A group of genetically enhanced augments visit Deep Space 9, seeking mentorship from Julian Bashir (who was similarly enhanced as a young child). The group quickly demonstrates impressive forecasting abilities and Dr. Bashir is drawn towards working with people on his own intellectual level, even if they are quirky and potentially violent.. When Weyoun and Damar visit the station for peace talks, Dr Bashir and his new friends discover that their calculations imply that the war against the Dominion cannot be won.

Bashir plays mentor to a group of fellow genetically enhanced augments while trying to find a purpose and a place for them in Federation society.

Building from the developments in “Doctor Bashir, I Presume?”, where it was revealed that Julian Bashir underwent illegal genetic enhancement at a young age, “Statistical Probabilities” takes some time to flesh out the reasons for that decision and the reasons that such enhancements were made illegal.

The augments are an interesting bunch – extremely intelligent but hindered with psychological issues ranging from the inability to speak to child-like wonder. The leader, Jack, is a ’90s genre TV portrayal of Brad Pitt’s character in 12 Monkeys. They begin to demonstrate extremely advanced projections that Starfleet becomes interested in exploring.

While working on their projections, the group uncovers a horrible analysis – the war against the Dominion cannot be won, and any further hostilities will only result in billions of deaths. Meanwhile, Weyoun and Damar arrive at DS9 seeking peace talks. In a twist of fate, Jack and his friends decide to betray the Federation in order to avoid needless bloodshed.

Wes and Clay do their own statistical analysis and end up discussing annoying tics, a philosophical demon, and the accuracy of Jack’s projections!
