Sisko’s frenemy, a Vulcan captain named Solok, visits the station with a surprise: he has created a holodeck baseball program. Solok challenges Sisko and his crew to a game against his Vulcan superteam. Sisko, ever eager to prove himself to Solok, accepts and becomes overly invested in the game.
The crew undergo a series of try-outs that breaks some hearts. They begin “spring training” and that breaks some arms. And then Avery Brooks gets to yell like a baseball manager, which breaks your immersion. It’s a ground-breaking episode of Star Trek!
“Take Me Out to the Holosuite” is a episode of DS9 that screams 1990’s. It focuses on baseball, which was peaking with the backdrop of the ’98 home run race between McGwire and Sosa. While it’s not explicitly a morality story, it has a Very Special Episode vibe that is all too eager to show its reverence for baseball as an American cultural institution.
In between praise of the Great American pastime we get some great Worf one-liners, a lot of shots of actors pretending to be baseball players, and a new characterization of the Vulcans.
As the final season of DS9 gets underway, the producers take a week off and give us a light-hearted and funny story that lets the cast try something new and provides some insight into the ensemble that has been built over the last seven years.
