That Hope Is You, Part I

Burnham navigates a strange, new galaxy, 930 years in her future, looking for the rest of the Discovery crew.

In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss “That Hope is You, Part I” and lay the ground work for how they’re going to approach the latest season of Star Trek: Discovery. Plus! The guys talk about Star Trek becoming more ethereal and religious in its storytelling, the lack of suburbs on alien planets, and the resetting of Michael Burnham.

The third season of Star Trek: Discovery kicks off with “That Hope Is You, Part I”! Michael Burnham finds herself 930 years in the future, alone and vulnerable. The USS Discovery might not have yet come through the temporal wormhole, leaving Burnham isolated and at the whims of this new universe. Fortunately, she befriends a smuggler named Book who takes mercy upon her and brings her to a black market. There, Burnham is drugged by the Andorian-Orion Alliance and starts to become emotional (although that’s not really much of a change) and act a little crazy.

Book’s plan comes together when he escapes the market with Burnham, plus some dilithium. Dilithium has become rare ever since “The Burn”, a catastrophic event that happened 100 years prior. Most of the dilithium in the universe spontaneously exploded and the resulting destruction crippled the Federation and Starfleet. There are only a handful of ships left, communications are in disarray, and crime and violence has spread across the galaxy.

Book and Burnham bond over their love of endangered species and large cats. Book brings Burnham to meet Sahil. Sahil has been the keeper of an old Starbase and has lived the past 40 years in isolation, keeping an eye on the stars for any hope of salvation. Into his life walks Michael Burnham and Sahil is convinced that his messiah has arrived. Together, they raise the Federation flag and dramatic music plays.
