The third season of Star Trek: Discovery comes to a close with “That Hope is You, Part II” as the Emerald Chain tightens its grip on the Federation. Plus, “The Burn” is solved! You may have thought it was solved about 3 episodes ago, but you’d be wrong, Culber was unaware of what was happening. He needed to be informed about dilithium sound waves and subspace harmonics.
The third season of Discovery has been a bit of a let down. The jump to the future has not provided the kick to the narrative that was expected. The mystery of “The Burn” was probably planned as a MacGuffin but since the story surrounding it was so weak it became the de facto main story line. So our search for the answer of “The Burn” became a loosely connected spine to hang episodic plots around, and hardly any of those stories managed to work.
“That Hope is You, Part II” brings a long running conclusion to a… conclusion. Through a spectacle of whizz-bang special effects and fight sequences, Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery take the fight to Osyraa and her crew of Daft Punk-esque regulators. Back on the dilithium holo-planet, Saru races against the clock to teach Su’Kal about the ways of the world and figure out the exact cause of “The Burn”.
