During a supply run to AR-558, Sisko meets a group of Starfleet officers who have been guarding a vital communications array. They have been under siege from the Jem’Hadar for months, and their numbers have whittled and their spirits have been crushed.
When the supply run is interrupted by a Jem’Hadar attack, the Defiant escapes to safety. Sisko, Nog, Bashir, Dax and Quark are left behind to experience the horrors of ground combat in the 24th century.
While the show has been skittish on focusing too strongly on the Dominion War (perhaps to its detriment), The Siege of AR-558 embraces the concept fully and completely. It’s a wonderfully shot, superbly acted character piece that shows us how the war has changed our characters and how they’re struggling to reconcile Federation values against the brutality of the war time experience.
The Dominion War has never felt quite so visceral! And unlike Rocks and Shoals, The Siege of AR-558 focuses entirely on the reaction of the main cast which allows the show to look inward and see if it can come up with a thesis about the war as a whole.
Wes and Clay discuss an episode that feels like a turning point for the series, and wonder what could have been.
