While on an escort mission, the Defiant receives a distress call from the captain of a lost starship. Captain Cusak informs the crew that she is marooned on a deadly planet and only has a few days left before the atmosphere poisons her and she shuffles off this mortal coil. As the Defiant races to the rescue, the crew spend some time with Cusak’s disembodied voice and exorcise their own personal demons.
Back on DS9, Odo is increasingly smitten with Kira. Sensing an weakness in the Constable’s ever-watchful eye, Quark works with Jake Sisko to smuggle some black market gems for a tidy profit. Will the duo be able to distract Odo long enough for them to make the deal?
“The Sound of Her Voice” is an episode that features a wonderful concept but falls a bit flat with its execution. Being the penultimate episode of season six, the show tried to summarize the difficulties that the crew has faced since the start of the Dominion War, but the episode still feels out of place and artificial relative to everything we’ve seen this season.
In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss DS9’s mixture of serialized and episodic television, and wonder about the episode that this could have been.
