Valiant – Ft. Clay

While on a trip to Ferenginar, Jake and Nog are attacked by the Jem’Hadar. They are saved by the USS Valiant, which is apparently commanded by a crew of Red Squad cadets – an elite group from Starfleet Academy that we last saw in Paradise Lost. The Valiant is on a dangerous mission to locate a Dominion warship behind enemy lines, but the biggest danger might be the cadets themselves.

DS9 pays homage to “Lord of the Flies” with a story about the collapse of values in the face of authoritarianism. Or at least… that’s what it seems like they were doing. But hey, the destruction of the Valiant is pretty great, huh?

Wes and Clay also discuss the unique uniforms of Red Squad, the training protocols of Starfleet, and the growing schism between themselves and the listeners!

While on a trip to Ferenginar, Jake Sisko and Nog’s runabout is attacked by the Jem’Hadar. The duo are saved by the USS Valiant – a Defiant-class warship. The Valiant is apparently commanded by a group of Red Squad cadets, who are an elite group of cadets at Starfleet Academy (and who we haven’t seen since Paradise Lost).

The cadets have taken command of the Valiant after the senior officers onboard were killed. They’ve been behind enemy lines for months, searching for a prototype Dominion warship. Jake and Nog develop very different attitudes towards the cadets – Jake, the reporter, is suspicious of them while Nog, the first generation Starfleet officer, is eager to please.

The Valiant’s mission is to locate and scan the warship, but that soon becomes a suicide mission to destroy the ship in order to save Federation lives.

DS9 does its best “Lord of the Flies” homage in an episode that continues to explore the theme of actions during wartime and the kinds of personalities that make those decisions. The series also touches on the role of journalism and objectivity by having Jake be directly involved in an event that he is “covering”.

In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss Star Trek’s attempt at paying homage to “Lord of the Flies” and the creeping authoritarianism that can occur when civilization breaks down.

Plus! The guys discuss the beauty of the Valiant’s destruction, the unique Red Squad uniforms, and the increasing schism between listeners and themselves!
