The Reckoning – Ft. Clay

After an ancient Bajoran tablet is discovered, Sisko finds himself embroiled in a battle between good and evil. The battle is known as “the Reckoning”, and the result will determine the fate of Bajor. Unfortunately, the ultimate battle is between Jake and Kira.

The Reckoning is the annual “Bajor” episode, so we get another Kai Winn appearance, some vague statements from the Prophets, and a lot of questions about the need to continue this storyline.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss their frustrations with the Prophets and the confounding actions of Kai Winn! Plus! They discuss the problem with important stories happening once every 26 episodes, Sisko as Abraham, and accepting the Prophets as the “good guys”!

After a 30,000 year old tablet is discovered under an ancient Bajoran city, Sisko learns that “the Reckoning” is afoot: the ultimate battle between good and evil will take place on Deep Space 9, and the fate of Bajor hangs in the balance.

In our now annual “Bajor episode”, we get appearances from our usual suspects. Kai Winn returns, the Prophets make some vague statements, and Sisko is conflicted about being the Emissary. We also get a return appearance from the Pah-Wraiths, the evil wormhole aliens who took over Keiko O’Brien all the way back in “The Assignment”.

Unfortunately, the Bajoran arc is becoming the ultimate case of kick the can. What started as a vague idea that was introduced in the pilot has become an albatross around the neck of the show. Sisko’s role as the Emissary demands that the arc continue, but nobody seems to know a good way to tie the mythology into the ending of the series.

As such, we get an episode full of vague religious references, character switcheroos, nonsensical character choices, and horrible SFX. The ultimate battle between good and evil leads to a disaster of a Star Trek episode.

In this podcast, Clay and Wes try to analyze the failures of the Bajoran arc. Is there potential here, or should this have been scrapped from the start? Why is a show built on the “grey” between moral choices reverting to cliche tropes of good versus evil?

Plus! The guys discuss terrible acting, wishing that Odo and Kira weren’t a thing, and the difference between Dukat and Winn!
