When Bashir shows off his new holosuite creation, a swinging lounge singer with top-notch relationship advice named Vic Fontaine, Odo has his interest piqued. He’s been pining after Kira for years now, but he’s unsure of how to proceed with her. Will this insightful, lightbulb powered hologram be able to provide him with any meaningful advice?
It’s a divisive issue amongst Trek fans: are Odo and Kira meant to be? And shouldn’t Vegas lounge acts be involved in every single episode of Star Trek going forward? It’s an episode that pushes up against and contradicts the backstory of two characters that we are intimately familiar with, but does so in a way that feels inevitable and essential.
It might be light on plot, but “His Way” has a kind of juvenile charm that feeds off the chemistry between Visitor and Auberjonois and also signals the incoming end of DS9 as a series. Even if it doesn’t make much sense as a destination, the journey has been worth it.
Of course, we also get to spend some time on the holosuite, which is a place that DS9 has tended to avoid (unlike TNG and VOY). DS9 has its own take on that magical technology and ends up playing a little fast and loose, but it also creates one of the more effective and interesting holo-characters in Vic Fontaine. Sure, his AI potential is frightening, but he can certainly croon some standards!
