DS9 DS9 Season 7

Extreme Measures

Odo is dying. The disease that has infected the Founders has spread to Odo, and he does not look well. To cure him, Bashir and O’Brien lure Section 31’s Sloan to DS9. They plan to enter his mind and steal the cure, and hopefully end Section 31 once and for all.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the last Bashir and O’Brien adventure and the end of Luther Sloan. Plus! They talk about the ease of capturing a secret agent, boring “dream sequences”, and unrealistic male friendships!

Odo is dying. The disease which has infected the Founders has made Odo extra crispy. He and Kira begin to prepare for the worst, but Dr. Bashir isn’t willing to give up yet. Section 31 created this disease, and they must have the cure for it. Bashir and O’Brien conspire to lure Section 31 to DS9 and then use illegal Romulan mind control devices to learn the cure. When none other than Luther Sloan shows up in Bashir’s bedroom, Bashir and O’Brien spring their trap. Unfortunately, Sloan has a 24th century version of a cyanide capsule in his mouth. Bashir manages to slow his death, but it becomes a race against the clock to learn all of Section 31’s secrets before Sloan expires. The dynamic duo will have to use “Extreme Measures” to save Odo.

This is a very strange episode of Star Trek: Deep Space 9. While it deals with an extremely important event (Odo’s sickness) and a sinister agency (Section 31), it also chooses to focus on the last adventure of Bashir and O’Brien. The duo have been a friendly team for many years, but this seems the wrong time and place to have their odd relationship put under the microscope. And the damage being done to Section 31 here can’t be understated. It’s a strange hour of the show that seems like it’s going to be wrapping up Bashir’s storyline but then veers into the absurd.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay try to understand how something with such promise could end up so lifeless. They debate the merits of the Bashir and O’Brien friendship and the way that the series closed out Section 31. Was “Extreme Measures” the right way to go?

Plus!

The guys discuss the ease of capturing a super secret spy, Avery Brooks forgetting that he’s acting, and the horrific event that was “Good Guy Sloan’s” speech.
