Far From Home

After the USS Discovery crash-lands on a strange planet, the crew finds themselves racing against time to repair their ship. Meanwhile, Saru and Tilly embark on a perilous first-contact mission in hopes of finding Burnham.

In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss “Far From Home” and the crew of the USS Discovery coming into their own (minus Michael Burnham). Plus! The guys discuss Burnham’s incredible hair growth, the terror of parasitic ice, and whether or not this is a “Magnificent Seven” story.

After the USS Discovery crash-lands on a strange planet, the crew finds themselves “Far From Home”. racing against time to repair their ship. Meanwhile, Saru and Tilly embark on a perilous first-contact mission in hopes of finding Burnham.

The USS Discovery exits the temporal wormhole and finds itself “Far From Home”. The ship navigates an asteroid field semi-successfully but eventually has to crash land on a strange, icy planet. The ship is damaged, but repairs must be done quickly. There is parasitic ice on this planet, and while no one is quite sure what that means it does not sound good. Fortunately, a few settlements are detected within walking distance and a mission is devised whereby Tilly and Saru will head out to find supplies and to figure where and when they are. The damage to the Discovery has prevented the crew from knowing where they have ended up, but the presence of life is only seen as a good sign.

In a small subplot, Detmer suffers some head injury and starts to become detached and distant from the people around her. Time travel PTSD?

Saru and Tilly head out to a nearby settlement and quickly make friends with the people living there. This settlement, however, is under the tyrannical control of Zareh – a courier (like Book) who suppresses the lives of the settlers by taking their supplies. Zareh eventually shows up, some western music plays and his spurs jangle as he walks across the floor of the local bar. Zareh discovers the truth behind Saru and Tilly and kills one of the settlers with his futuristic gun. He is about to take Tilly and Saru back to Discovery to steal their dilithium when Georgiou shows up. After a bit of light torture, Zareh is about to kill Georgiou when she starts doing some kung fu and kills everyone. Typical Georgiou!

Meanwhile, back on Discovery, Stamets and Jet Reno get up to some hijinks when Stamets has to crawl through a Jeffries tube in order to fix something and Reno mocks him. Pretty standard stuff for those two.
