Maps and Legends

In “Maps and Legends”, we gain additional insight into the world in which this series takes place. As Picard begins to investigate the mystery of Dahj he learns that Starfleet will not assist him.

But there’s trouble underfoot – some Starfleet officers appear to be shady (surprise!) and are in league with the Romulans on the Borg Reclamation site.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay dissect the episode like it’s a Borg drone!

In “Maps and Legends”, Picard begins investigating the mystery of Dahj as well as what her very existence means to the Federation. Without Starfleet’s support, Picard is left leaning on others for help, including Dr. Agnes Jurati and an estranged former colleague, Raffi Musiker. Meanwhile, hidden enemies are also interested in where Picard’s search for the truth about Dahj will lead.

Picard learns about the Zhat Vash – a secret Romulan cabal that, for reasons unknown, has prevented the development of android technology. He and his Romulan assistants discover that the Zhat Vash has wiped clean any record of Dahj’s communication with her sister. Or have they? They eventually discover the slimmest of clues to her location.

Picard realizes that he must gain access to a ship in order to find Bruce Maddox. He believes that Maddox holds the key to uncovering the intentions of the daughters of Data. Unfortunately, Picard’s off the cuff interview from the previous episode has soured Starfleet to the legendary admiral. He is chastised and sent packing by Admiral Clancy.

Picard learns some devastating news from his doctor: he has a terminal illness.

On the Romulan Reclamation site (otherwise known as a Borg Cube), we get a glimpse into the Romulan society. The Borg Cube is reclaimed by the Romulans and other species. Former Borg drones are being disconnected from the Collective. Workers shuffle about as the Borg ship looms around them.

In “Maps and Legends” we get a good sense of the state of the universe. After the introductory episode, this hour wastes no time in delivering a large amount of exposition. And it manages to do so fairly effectively! We touch base with Starfleet, the Romulans, and even Picard’s current health.

In this episode of the podcast, Wes and Clay discuss modern television pacing, the impending terror of the Borg, and telling two stories in the space of one!
