In “Tacking Into the Wind”, our characters find themselves working against the current as they have to give up their old ways of thinking and embrace the changing times. DS9 has always done politics well, and this episode manages to link the past and the present.

Worf and Martok continue to chafe under Gowron‘s command. The Klingon Chancellor is determined to eliminate Martok as a political threat, even if it means the end of the Empire. After a conversation with Ezri, Worf realizes that the Empire might be on its way out. In order to save the Alpha Quadrant and the Klingon Empire, Worf decides that something must be done to stop Gowron.

Behind enemy lines, Kira, Odo, Garak and Damar learn that Breen technology is being installed on Dominion ships. The last hope of the Federation lies in that technology: stealing it will provide valuable insights into the weapon. The group board a Jem’Hadar ship and initiate a heist to bring the weapon back home safely. However, the Cardassians in the group start to splinter under the direction forward. A Cardassian stand-off leads to a single vision in Cardassian leadership and leaves the old ways lying in the dust.

“Tacking Into the Wind” manages to wrangle a few franchise arching stories. Both the Klingon and Cardassian Empires have existing since TNG, and this episode attempts to bring both societies narratives to a close. It’s an epic space-opera war story that tries to bring about progress while still being tethered to the past.

In this podcast, Wes and Clay discuss the most exciting episode of the “Final Chapter” (so far). They discuss the past and the present and how DS9 is serving to link the two in a novel way.
