The USS Discovery crew journeys to a mysterious planet in hopes of finding a cure for Georgiou’s deteriorating condition. Stamets and Adira make a break through with the Burn data. “Terra Firma, Part I” focuses largely on the character of Georgiou, who, to this point, has been by far the weakest main character on the show. The Emperor of the Mirror Universe has been largely impotent on Discovery. She cracks wise and makes fun of people, and then does some kung-fu when the situation arises. But the character has never served as a foil to Burnham or the values of the Federation. She is instead treated as comic relief (undone by a tremendously unfunny performance) and a strange fish-out-of-water tale that never lands. And since the crew of the USS Discovery don’t seem to fear her, any threat that the character is supposed to represent never comes across.

In “Terra Firma, Part I”, Georgiou learns that her condition is terminal. She has been away from the Mirror Universe for too long and her jump forward in time has only exacerbated her condition. She learns of a planet that harbors a 5% chance that she can be cured, and Michael Burnham agrees to travel with her to find out. The two arrive at an icy planet and discover a mysterious alien dressed in 1940s attire who has a mysterious doorway. He speaks in riddles but hints that the doorway will be the solution to Georgiou’s problems. Georgious steps through the door and…

… finds herself back in the Mirror Universe, on the day that Lorca and Burnham would attempt to betray her! Will georgious learn her lesson? Will her time in the Prime Universe impact the way she’ll act in her own domain?

In the meantime, Stamets and Adira have some nonsense problem with the Burn data but are soon pepped up and deliver to Saru some new information. The ship at the center of the Burn nebula is a Kelpian vessel! This is wonderful because Saru is a Kelpian! So that’s great.
