Kira uses the Orb of Time to travel into the past to investigate Gul Dukat’s claim that he and her mother were once lovers.
In the past, Kira reunites with her family and becomes close with her unsuspecting mother, Meru. After they’re assigned the role of “comfort women” to high ranking Cardassian officers, Kira and Meru begin to move in different directions. While Kira believes that they must fight and never back down, Meru has a more complicated decision.
In one of Star Trek’s most morally confounding episodes, Meru grapples with grief, hunger, salvation, guilt, death, family and sadism. Gul Dukat eventually takes her under his protection and provides her with everything that she could ever want or need, but he cannot remove the memory of her family that was left behind.
While the episode features a somewhat questionable time travel mechanic, it more than makes up for it with a story line that both enhances our understanding of the Bajoran Occupation and confuses our sense of what would be right and wrong in such a world. Even if Sisko can’t believe the premise at the start of the episode (“Let me get this straight…”), by the end everyone is left shaken and vulnerable.
Clay and Wes discuss “Wrongs Darker than Death or Night” and explain why they’re glad that they didn’t give up after the opening 5 minutes!
Plus! They break down the placement of “Waltz”, analyze the complexities of Bajorans, and argue about the importance of plot mechanics that introduce a great story!
