DS9 DS9 Season 7

Chrysalis

The genetically enhanced group from “Statistical Probabilities” returns to the station to have Doctor Bashir treat Sarina, the quiet one. After Bashir works his magic, he begins to fall in love with his patient and becomes too enamored with a life that he has always wanted but has never been able to have.

Wes and Clay discuss “Chrysalis” and wonder if DS9 is on a slow, downward trajectory. Plus! The guys discuss the dated humor of the “deaf voice”, the stationary characters of Kira and Odo, and the quantifiable loneliness of Julian Bashir!

Bashir’s old friends, the genetically augmented psych patients from “Statistical Probabilities” have returned to Deep Space 9. They brought Sarina, the mute, to see Doctor Bashir because they believe that he’ll be able to treat her and provide her with the opportunity for a more “normal” life.

Dr. Bashir works his medical magic. Sarina is cured! Almost immediately, she begins socializing and breaking out of her shell. Her condition was a paralyzing “Chrysalis” and now she has turned into a social butterfly! What a powerful metaphor.

Unfortunately, Bashir finds himself falling for his patient. Even ignoring the conflict of interest, his worst traits start to come out. He sees in Sarina a life that he’s always wanted: the ability to love someone who can hold their own against his towering intellect. Someone who will make him food in the morning. And someone who’ll take all the blame when things go wrong.

“Chrysalis” is a strange episode. It has almost no forward momentum. It brings back guest stars that we could do without. It posits a world where Julian Bashir has no friends. And it’s also happening in the final season of a show that is currently engaged in the biggest serialized arc that the franchise has ever seen.

Clay and Wes discuss the episode and try to determine if DS9 is running out of gas, just like TNG did in its final season.

Plus! The guys discuss the stationary characters of Odo and Kira, the quantifiable loneliness of Bashir, and not having an angle to your story!
